- The modern city: Spans both sides of the Sultan Qaboos Highway and hosts most international hotels.
- Mutrah: Home to most historical monuments and tourist attractions.
Where to Stay in Muscat?
While Mutrah is the most touristic area, hotel options there are limited. The best choice is often to stay in international hotels, which offer all amenities at competitive prices.
🔹 Getting Around Muscat: To move freely, having your own vehicle is essential. We rented a 4×4 at Muscat International Airport, which allowed us to explore the city without restrictions.

Best Hotels in Muscat
Hotels in Mutrah:

- Prime location near Mutrah.
- Luxury facilities with a marble hall and high-end restaurant.
- Shaded heated pool, ideal for enduring extreme summer heat.
📌 Fun fact: It’s one of the few pools in Muscat where you can swim in August at 45ºC without suffering from direct sunlight.
Hotels in the Modern City:
🏨 Royal Tulip Muscat (5 stars)
- Located in the modern area.
- Rooftop pool with sea views.
- Excellent value for money.
🏨 W Muscat (Seafront)
- Located in Ras al Jaima, near the Royal Opera House of Oman.
- Famous for its pool parties with live music.
🏡 Lana Villa (Beachfront)
- An alternative to conventional hotels.
- Run by German expatriates, offering an exclusive and cozy atmosphere.
- Off-road vehicle rental service with a rooftop tent (active-oman.com).
Is Alcohol Allowed in Oman? 🍻
Drinking alcohol in Oman is prohibited in public places, and there is no free sale in supermarkets. However, international hotels have a license to serve it. Keep in mind that:
- It is only sold in hotels and private clubs.
- Prices are significantly higher than in Europe or the US.
